Mental Health Nursing,
My 25 year Journey, Supporting People with Mental Health Problems, Challenges and Stigma. Utilising CBT, DBT and Psychological Counselling
I first started learning about Neuro Linguistic Programming, mental health and the 'personal development' field of life when I was 18. This interest started after studying Philosophy and Spirituality at College and through my interest in Martial Arts. Having exposure to Eastern and Western Philosophies, I soon started to realise the benefits to my Mental and Physical Wellbeing.
After leaving College, I knew I wanted to follow a vocational route in life and started to work at a local Nursing home. I found the job very enjoyable which led me to working in Healthcare supporting clients and eventually qualifying as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1997, where I dedicated the next 23 years of my life supporting clients and staff from all walks of life.
I worked across a broad range of services both in the hospitals and in the community. Supporting people with all forms of mental health diagnosis and disorders. utilising a wide range of psychological therapies from schema informed therapy, to cognitive behavioural therapy, to dialectical behaviour therapy to counselling and nursing models of care and recovery.
Like all people, I have had many challenges in life and have had to overcome many obstacles; financial instability, debt management, divorce, stress management, bereavement, serious physical injuries, weight management issues, mental health problems, anxiety, fear, low mood, lack of motivation, relationship disconnect, academic challenges, loss of direction, lack of purpose and a lack of passion for life.
Despite all these challenges, I have found that it’s easy to look at these problems as failures, instead of what they truly are, life lessons! I saw each challenge as an obstacle, to navigate either over, around or through! With this mindset, I have developed the strength, resilience, maturity and consistence in my approach to enable me to be the balanced and centred person I am today.
I am a Father of two beautiful girls, that keep me young and energised, have a loving and supportive fiancée, that provides me with the unconditional love everyone deserves and a real connection to my family and friends that enrich my life.
I have over 30 years’ experience in Healthcare and 20 years’ experience in Senior Management and Clinical Specialities. During this time I have overseen a number of NHS Services, Hospitals, Community Services and been involved in setting up new therapeutic services and models of care. The primary aim was to a). ensure that the clients were receiving the best psychological interventions to best support their mental health diagnosis and treatment plan; b) to reduce the amount of time required in therapy so they could return to their homes or work as soon as they felt able too.
As a Clinical Practitioner and Mental Health Nurse, I have had the pleasure of working with and being part of some of the most dedicated and professional Multi-Disciplinary Team members in the UK. We consistently, enabled clients and team members to reach the goals they set for themselves and lead a truly meaningful and purposeful life.
Now as a CBT Practitioner, Psychological Counsellor & Qualified Mental Health Nurse, I want to utilise the wealth of experience and knowledge I have gained throughout my career to make a difference to my clients. I want to help them to overcome any mental health challenge they are experiencing and through solution focused interventions, empower them to be fit, well and safe.
These are challenging times, but we are all in this together and will get through it together.
Please drop me a message or email and I would be more than happy to call or message you back.
